Summary
Diary entries are handwritten in black ink. Diary also contains newspaper cuttings taken by Schmeisser from local newspapers, with articles discussing the importance of his and Vogelsang's visits to various locations, two hand-sketched diagrams, a looseleaf newspaper cutting dated 8 February 1942 (found between pages 194 and 195), a looseleaf watercolour and charcoal painting of a tree, signed "S. Wencke, Worpswede" (found between pages 82 and 83), a looseleaf handwritten letter signed "Karl" (likely Karl Vogelsang), sent from Melbourne, 27 January 1896 (found between pages 180 and 181), a map "Norddentscher Lloyd, Bremen", a partial sheet of paper with black ink writing in German (found between pages 8 and 9), a looseleaf envelope postmarked around 14 February 1952, addressed to Eugenie Schmeisse, a relative of Karl Schmeisser, and four looseleaf photo-mechanical process photographs relating to Schmeisser's earlier trip to the Transvaal goldfields. Schmeisser's diary, which contains a mass of technical information and commentary relating to gold mining activities on the Western Australian goldfields, formed the basis of his book Die Goldfelder Australasiens (Berlin, 1897) which was translated into English as The gold-fields of Australasia (London, 1898)
