Summary
A joint Australian and United States naval communication station, the base is located on the north west cape, six km north of Exmouth. Commissioned in 1967 and initially operated by the US Navy, the station provides very low frequency radio transmission to United States Navy, Royal Australian Navy and allied ships and submarines in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans. In addition to its operational and administrative support, the US military base also featured accommodation and recreation facilities, a hospital, church, and Best Western Inn. US Currency was used on base and vehicles drove on the right hand side of the road. The US handed control of the base to the Royal Australian Navy in 1992.
