BA2493/2960: The main prayer hall in Perth Mosque, Northbridge, during the COVID-19 lockdown

Summary

Perth Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the country. While the original mosque - the main prayer hall - was built in 1904, there have been progressive additions over the years to cater to a larger patronage. The courtyard is one of these additions. With five calls for prayer each day, the mosque typically attracts large numbers of worshippers, particularly on Fridays when the total attendance in the three prayer rooms can total one thousand. During the lockdown the numbers in this, the original and oldest prayer hall were restricted to a maximum of 20 people. The mosque was designed and built by Din Mohammed in 1904, with funds raised by Muslim camel drivers who were originally from Pakistan. These men drove the camel teams which carried supplies from Perth to the Goldfields. The morning and evening prayer sessions are very well attended.
