Item Detail
Summary
Marjorie Apthorpe migrated to Australia with her parents at age 4. After university she was employed as a petrologist with BHP in Melbourne. Her first paleontologist position came with the joint venture between BHP and the Victorian Government, undertaking dating work for the first oil wells in Bass Strait. She joined the staff of Shell which led to her becoming involved with Burmah Oil (later Woodside) which was drilling for gas on the North West Shelf of Western Australia. Joining the Woodside staff in 1973, she worked as a paleontologist and was one of the first women to go onto a drilling rig whilst employed by Woodside.
