Title supplied by donor. Prints at 7098B and BA287/554 are stamped on back Illustrations Ltd. Illustrations Ltd have made these photographs from an old print. It is not known who took the original photograph. Inferior copies of this photograph are held accessioned at 555B/2, 4689B/186 and BA287/554. Dating this photograph: An image which has been published many times. The railway to Guildford wasn’t officially opened until 1881 so the date of 1880 as published in the Western Mail in 1927 is definitely out. The loco hauling the train is a government engine that weren’t placed in service until March 1881 and became the ‘C’ class. They were given small tenders in 1888 and that doesn’t show in this image so it’s before that and can’t be the 1890s. The book Robb’s Railway dates the image as ‘about 1882’ which is almost certainly correct. (Information supplied by railway historian D. Whiteford, 2017)
