Summary

Book caption: The escarpment of the Hamersley Range rises to a general height of 900 m with a maximum of 1235 m at Mt Meharry on the plateau behind. The frontal escarpment is dissected by impressive gorges such as Dales and Wittenoom Gorges. The horizontally bedded rocks are extremely hard and consist of jaspilite and dolomite beds between which there are veins of blue asbestos. The view of Wittenoom Gorge here shows the asbestos mine which formerly operated here before the danger to health of this mineral was fully realised. Triodia wiseana on the slopes, river red gums, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, in the valley bottom.
