Book caption: The Esperance Plains slope down to the sea and continue offshore below sea level where the granite domes now emerge as islands forming the Recherche Archipelago. These islands could not have been reached by Aborigines and were not burnt in earlier times. Most of them have still not experienced bushfires and the vegetation there gives an impression of lushness, of plants growing in age-old accumulation of humus, a feeling quite different from the barrenness of the mainland. Low forest of Eucalyptus or Melaleuca is the dominant plant formation. Kwongan occurs on sandy plateau surfaces, and has a composition different from that on the mainland.
