Book caption: York gum (E. loxophleba) may occur in pure stands or associated with either wandoo or salmon gum. The soil is typically red loam sandy at the surface. York gum country was considered to offer the best prospects for farming and there is now little of it left so that it is difficult to find a virgin stand to photograph. Apart from the large shrubs such as the raspberry jam tree, Acacia acuminata (because the dry heartwood smells of raspberry jam), York gum stands typically have a herbaceous ground layer. Although this appears beautifully grassy at a distance, however, most of it is sedges and rushes (Restionaceae) mixed with spring annuals. New Norcia.
