Item Detail
Summary
The Mechanics' Hall, on the south-west corner of Howick (later Hay) and Pier Streets, dates from 1851 when the Swan River Mechanics Institute was established. It was later replaced by spacious two storey premises and the name changed to Perth Literary Institute in 1909. Perth City Council took over the Institute in 1957 and a free lending library was opened to replace the Institute's Subscription Library. See 230489PD for a slightly later photograph of the building which has been extended and now houses a library.
