Item Detail
Summary
Foreground left is the factory of the W.A. Netting & Wire Co. Ltd which manufactures wire link fencing under the brand name Pioneer Netting. The W.A. Post Office Directory for 1935 gives the address as Cambridge Street, Leederville (later West Leederville). The two storey building at right is the premises of the Childrens Protection Society (their sign for the Infant Health Centre and Day Nursery can be seen on the second floor). This building is the de-licenced Golden Age Hotel which by 1935 has the address 1 Harrogate Street, corner Alfred Street, Leederville. Earlier references in Post Office Directories and newspapers give the address as Howard Street, Leederville corner of Alfred Street. Howard Street becomes Harrogate Street in 1916 with the Post Office Directory for that year listing Harrogate St for the first time and the reference Howard St, Leederville see Harrogate St. Newspaper articles in 1933 refer to the society hoping the secure the old Golden Age Hotel. In 1949 the building was converted into the Golden Age Children's Polio Convalescent Hospital with newspaper articles clearly referring to it as being in the old de-licensed Golden Age Hotel ie the same building. This hospital closed in 1959.
