Trained as a doctor, Patricia originally wanted to be an obstetrician, but owing to her gender and marital status, was discriminated against. She and her husband, became involved with the fishing industry. In 1969, she became interested in the study of muscular dystrophy under the guidance of Dr Kakulas at RPH, and spent a lot of time at Rocky Bay, where she was chairman and also became chairman of the Advisory Council of the Disbility Services Commission. She then recalls her days as a GP in Dongara, which were difficult, as she was raising 4 children. She became involved in genetic counselling with people who have muscular dystrophy in the family, and talks at length about Dr. Kakulas. She feels that one of the most positive changes in Western Australian medicine, was the creation of a Minister for Disability Services.
