Summary
004246D: Sleeper cutters working as a pair. Note the tools of the trade - chopping and broadaxe, maul, cross-cut saw, kangaroo jack and crowbar. Also note the blocking or scoring, done with an ordinary axe, on the near side of the central billet to remove excess wood and allow easier squaring; 004247D: Marking the side of a billet before trimming using a double cord line, held at the near end by nicks made in the baulk. The far ends, held in a similar manner are tightened and then sprung to leave a chalk line; the spacing determined by a measuring board.
