The poem is based on an event described in an article published in the Sunday Times 29 March 1903, p.1b: Subiaco sensation: Attempted highway robbery. The article reads: A daring attempt to stick up and rob Mr Ralph Deering, manager of the W.A. Lime Supply Co., occurred between Subiaco and Claremont yesterday, shortly before midday. Deering was conveying 300 pounds from the office to the works in order to pay the men their wages. He was on horseback, and when proceeding through the scrub three masked and armed emulators of Dick Turpin blocked his way and pointing their revolvers at him told him to bail up. The horse Deering was riding was young and restive and shied to the right. Seizing the opportunity Deering dug his heels into the colt and away he flew into the bush. The desperadoes followed for about a quarter of a mile, and then gave up the chase. The matter was referred to the police, who set to work with all expedition to hunt up clues. During the afternoon Detective Porter arrested a man named O'Donoghue alias 'The Crow', who it is alleged, may be one of the trio of bushrangers, though at a late hour last night he had not been identified by Deering as one of the gang.022353PD us a cartoon commenting on the cost of joining the Perth Golf Club presented to Captain Wallace. James Wallace, statistician working for the Mines Dept. He and his wife Nellie lived at 267 Adelaide Tce., Perth (see Post Office Directory, 1903, Blue Book, 1903, Electoral Roll, 1903) J. Wallace was Captain of the Perth Golf Club in 1905.
