Item Detail
Summary
Stuart Gore and his wife (Jan Kennedy) took a supply of food, film and other equipment in an old car they renovated, which had once belonged to Claude De Bernales, and made a slow journey up the north west coast of W.A. This is a film record of that journey. There are a few shots of The N W Coastal Highway (including the water tanks), Shark Bay, and Carnarvon (including two-up at the races, the river, train on the jetty), but it concentrates on the northern sector. It includes Broome deep sea pearl divers, Udialla ration station, the Bungarun orchestra and a five-minute section when the photographer walked with the Mount Anderson Aboriginal people to their caves to meet desert visitors, to make spears and hunt kangaroos, and swim at the Fitzroy River. Two little boys, John and Harry Watson from Mount Anderson station, were filmed by Stuart Gore being shown how to drink water at the billabong by senior men. The boys stayed at Mount Anderson station and became stock workers and leaders in the Kimberley. The film was presented personally by Mr Gore at public showings at which he delivered a spoken commentary.
