Summary
Up to one thousand protesters joined the rally. It took place in Supreme Court Gardens, just off Barrack Street, with a march down Barrack Street to Wellington Street and along William Street before returning and finishing in Supreme Court Gardens. The protest was the third Black Lives Matter rally called in solidarity following the death in the US of African American George Floyd after white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee against Mr Floyd's neck during an arrest, and to protest Aboriginal deaths in custody. The protests that took place in Perth over June and July were organised by a group of five young women of colour. The protests also sparked controversy due to the COVID-19 restrictions and the fear of the rallies being the possible catalysts for spreading the virus.
