Title devised by cataloguer. This image has been preserved and made available by the Historical Records Rescue Consortium Project supported by Lotterywest. The Perth Airport terminal building was opened in 1962, in time for the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. The southern end of the terminal contained the check-in desks for international flights, but also had the check in desk for intrastate airline MMA (MacRobertson Miller Airlines). Later MMA joined with the Ansett check-in counter at the northern end of the terminal. Also visible is the large world map with coloured clocks depicting the times at various major cities around the world. Near the international/MMA check in area, there are signs depicting the international airlines (plus domestic MMA) operating from Perth at the time. From top to bottom the signs include: MMA – MacRobertson Miller Airlines, Qantas, SAA (South African Airways), Air India, and BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), which merged in 1974 with British European Airways Corporation (BEA) to form British Airways. The northern end contained check in desks for domestic flights by Ansett-ANA and TAA (Trans Australia Airlines). Between the two check-in areas was a seating area for passengers and visitors. Outside on the east side of the terminal was a large courtyard with gardens, grassed areas and a pond for Black Swans (the state emblem of WA). Visitors could also go upstairs to outdoor aircraft viewing areas. In 1975 a new international passenger transit lounge was added to the 1962 terminal. Following the opening of a new International Terminal on the east side of the airport in October 1986, the 1962 terminal was used solely for domestic flights. It later became Terminal 3, known as the Multi-User Terminal, used by Ansett, Skywest and Virgin Blue Airlines. Air India commenced services thru Perth on 4 Oct 1962, BOAC in April 1966. MSA (Malaysia-Singapore Airlines) began operations to Perth in April 1967 and Cathay Pacific on 2 April 1970, but there is no signage for these two airlines, which indicates the photos were taken between April 1966 (when BOAC started flights to Perth) and April 1967 (when MSA started flying to Perth). This is also supported by the fact that the domestic check-in desks have Ansett-ANA signs (Ansett-ANA was renamed Ansett Airlines in November 1968).
