The Perth Airport terminal building was opened in 1962, in time for the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. The large courtyard area on the east side of the terminal with gardens, grassed areas and a pond for Black Swans (the state emblem of WA) is visible. In 1975 a new international passenger transit lounge was added to the terminal. Following the opening of a new International Terminal on the east side of the airport in October 1986, the 1962 terminal was used solely for domestic flights. It later became Terminal 3, known as the Multi-User Terminal, used by Ansett, Skywest and Virgin Blue Airlines. The courtyard and pond disappeared in the mid 1980s when the terminal was expanded. As the Government’s Two Airline Policy was in force, TAA and Ansett were required to purchase the same type of aircraft, and operated their schedules at similar times. TAA (Trans Australia Airlines) introduced the Boeing 727 in October 1964. By the time this photo was taken on 28 July 1966, TAA had three Boeing 727s in their fleet, all being the 727-100 version (designated 727-76 for TAA). Their registrations were VH-TJA, VH-TJB, and VH-TJC. Another 727-76 was delivered a couple of weeks after this photo, followed by two more in 1969 and 1970, and 12 of the larger Boeing 727-200s (727-276) from 1972. Ansett-ANA introduced the Boeing 727 in October 1964. There were three Boeing 727s in the Ansett-ANA fleet by the date this photo was taken, all of them being the 727-100 version (designated 727-77). Their registrations were VH-RMD, VH-RME, and VH-RMF. Another was delivered a couple of weeks after this photo. On 1 November 1968, ʻANA’ (Australian National Airways) was dropped from the name altogether and the airline was called Ansett Airlines. Two more 727-77s were subsequently delivered in 1969 and 1970, followed by 16 Boeing 727-200s (727-277) from 1972. MacRobertson-Miller Airlines (MMA) operated a total of 8 Douglas DC-3 aircraft from November 1945 to March 1970 throughout the whole of Western Australia, and to the Northern Territory. In 1967, their registrations were VH-MMA, MMB, MMD, MMF, MMK, MML, MMM and MMT. The Fokker F.27 Friendship turboprop airliner began replacing DC-3s in the MMA fleet from the end of 1959, and most DC-3s were withdrawn from service during 1969 and 1970, just as the Fokker F.28 Fellowship jet entered service with MMA.
