Summary
Previously dated to 1869, now dated to between 1891 and 1895. Over the door is the name of the proprietor: W.S. Savage. William Savage identifies himself as Proprietor of the Freemasons Hotel for the first time in an advertisement in the West Australian 19 December 1891, p.1. Previously the proprietor was H.B. Chipper (see West Australian 5/10/1889, p.3) and prior to this James Joseph Dearden (note in West Australian1 May 1884, p.3 police court evidence) and previously E.S. James who died in 1878. The Freemasons Hotel was sold by auction 24 Dec. 1895 (West Australian 26 Dec. 1895, p.5). By 1897 the Palace Hotel had been built on this site.Crowded horse-drawn carriage in front of hotel building.
Warnings and disclaimer
Handwritten on back of BA1344/84: "Old Freemasons Hotel, Bunbury", however the image has been identified as Perth. No record can be found of a Freemasons Hotel in Bunbury. Written on back of copy at 795B: The Freemason's Hotel. The Palace Hotel now stands on the site. The old hotel at the corner of William St and St George's Tce was demolished in 1897. This image was received in six donations. Scan done from copy at 8956B/1302 which is a glass negative of an original print.
