Title taken from back of photograph. Identified as the troopship SS Ascanius. The first Australian contingent to leave from Fremantle was on the SS Ascanius and SS Medic. Photographs by E.L. Mitchell of troops going on board on the morning of 31st October are published in the Western Mail Xmas issue 11 December 1914, p.23. There is a report of the entire process of the departure on 2 November to join a convoy of ships published in the Western Mail 20 November 1914, p.17 (after the embargo on publication was lifted)
